Windows:

• It connects but it is still my IP - The most common problem with OpenVPN for people who have trouble getting it running is that it is not running as Administrator. OpenVPN must be running as Administrator or it will not work. Close any instances of it already running, right click on the desktop icon and select Run As Administrator to start it. If you do not do this, it will look like it connected fine, but it will not work.
  
  
• It says AUTH_FAIL in the log - The second most common problem for those who upgrade to OpenVPN is using the wrong password. If you just upgraded to OpenVPN then your OpenVPN password is not the same as your e-mail password. You must use the password in the VPN welcome message. You can change your VPN password under Options-Change VPN Password in webmail. Please pay attention to the change password error messages. If the form does not leave the change password page after you change it, then there is an error message at the top of the page explaining why and your password has not been changed.
  
  
• It won't connect - OpenVPN defaults to port 1194 UDP. This is for speed. This also means that it will not work for those behind restrictive firewalls. If this is the case for you, please choose Edit Config for the server you selected and change the port as detailed in the configuration file. This is especially an issue for China. many users there will need to change their port to 443 and TCP.
  
  
• I can't connect to any other server - Because OpenVPN defaults to a UDP port and uses the same port for every server, once you connect to one server you will not be able to immediately disconnect and connect to another server. Your router will deny this. This is because your router has set up a specific mapping for the UDP port and expects traffic only from the server it set it up for. Switching servers will cause your router to deny the connection. Either wait 10-20 minutes from disconnecting before connecting to another server to give your router time to time out the port mapping it has set up or select Edit Config and change the ports for the other servers.
  
  
• It is slow and disconnects - If OpenVPN is slow and disconnects a lot you may need to change the MTU setting. The default MTU setting in the OpenVPN config is 1500 for speed. However, some networks will require you to change this to 1492 or even 1472. Please note that OpenVPN MTU is different from your network settings MTU. The setting you need to change is in the OpenVPN config.
  
  
• Most connection issues can be addressed by changing port, proto, and MTU in the Config file. Choose Edit Config to see details on this.
  
  

MAC:

• It constantly disconnects - If you select "Monitor Connection" in Tunnelblick, your VPN connection will keep disconnecting. Uncheck Monitor Connection.
  
  
• It says AUTH_FAIL in the log - If you are getting "Auth Failed" in your log file and you are not being prompted for a login and password then you likely saved a bad login and password to your apple password store, you'll need to clear that saved entry and use the correct login and password.
